YOUGHAL is gearing up for an inspiring and educational week as the Youghal Blue and Green Community Network prepares to host its Climate Action Week (CAW) from the 12th to 20th October 2024. This event promises a series of activities and initiatives aimed at raising awareness about climate change and promoting sustainable living practices within the community.

A New Partnership with the Youghal Film and Photography Museum

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s Climate Action Week is the new partnership with the newly opened Youghal Film and Photography Museum (YFPM). The museum is delighted to be part of the CAW events, contributing to the celebration with a range of engaging screenings and talks over both weekends.

A photoshoot was arranged today with members and volunteers from both organisations at the YFPM, where details of the wonderful screenings and talks were shared. These events will highlight the beauty of Youghal and its surrounding areas through a special film series.

Film Screenings

The featured film series, “Youghal: Coastal Communities Wildlife & Habitats,” is a collection of short informational videos presented by the Youghal Blue and Green Community Network. These films explore various aspects of Youghal’s natural environment, showcasing its rich biodiversity and the efforts to preserve it. The series are as follows:

– Youghal Blue and Green Community Network (Introduction):

– Ballyvergan Marsh:

– Youghal Coast:

– Slob Bank:

– Keane Park:

– Youghal Fisheries:

The series aims to strengthen and support efforts in responding to climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and maintaining clean beaches and healthy marine and coastal life. It emphasises being sensitive to and careful of wildlife, woodlands, and green environments.

Special Exhibitions

Additionally, a local professional wildlife photographer will present a special slideshow of his invaluable work capturing wildlife over many years. Ed Guiry will be present to discuss his work and the changing environment he has documented. There will also be a special audio recording titled “Youghal Weathering the Storm” as part of the overall events.

Launch Event

Speaking at today’s launch, Dr Maria Power, coordinator of CAW24 in Youghal, said, “We are delighted to be partnering with YFPM. It’s important that we all work together to make this a success. We have over forty events planned for the week, and having the dedicated staff and volunteers of YFPM on board, screening these remarkable films, is going to be fantastic. The films were specially commissioned and made locally by the talented filmmakers Kieran McCarthy and Michael Twomey of Complete Control Films, and combined with Ed Guiry’s wildlife work, they will be amazing. This is exactly what the project is all about.”

The curator of the museum, Ed Guiry, added, “We are delighted to be part of this fantastic project. We have only been up and running for the past few months, and to already be partnering with the Youghal Blue and Green Community Network in this great project is exciting, educational, and informative. It raises awareness of our environment, and it’s just great.”

Collaborative Efforts

The staff of the Youghal Blue and Green Community Network, including Grainne Furey and Mark Faley, community climate action workers, along with the volunteers of YFPM, were given a tour of the museum and a brief screening of the films. This collaboration highlights the importance of local organisations working together for the future of the town and its surrounding areas.
